CBD kief and CBD hash are two of the most popular hemp products in specialist retail. Both are made from the resin glands of the hemp plant, but they are processed and handled differently. Here is what wholesale buyers should know.
What is CBD kief?
Kief is the loose, powdery collection of trichomes, the tiny resin glands on the surface of hemp flowers. It is separated mechanically, usually by sifting dried plant material through fine mesh screens. No solvents are involved.
- Texture: fine, loose powder, from pale gold to green
- Potency: higher than flower, because it is concentrated trichomes
- Grades: finer mesh and more careful sifting give a cleaner, paler product with less plant matter
What is CBD hash?
Hash is made by compressing trichomes into a solid block or slab. Different methods give different styles:
- Charas-style: traditionally hand-rubbed, giving a soft, pliable texture
- Static or dry-sift pressed: trichomes separated using static or screens, then pressed into a firmer block
- Mousse-style: a soft, airy texture created by gentle processing and blending

| Form | Loose powder | Pressed block or slab |
| Processing | Sifted | Sifted or rubbed, then pressed |
| Shelf stability | More exposed to air | More stable when pressed |
| Handling | Easy to weigh and repack | Needs cutting for smaller units |
