CBD, CBG and CBN Explained: A Comparison for Wholesale Buyers

CBD, CBG and CBN are the three hemp cannabinoids most often traded as B2B raw materials. They are related, but they come from different points in the plant's chemistry, which affects availability, price and how they are supplied. Here is a practical overview for buyers.

Where each cannabinoid comes from

  • CBG (cannabigerol) is the starting point. The plant first makes CBGA, which enzymes then convert into other cannabinoid acids. Mature hemp usually contains only small amounts of CBG, so high-CBG material comes from specially bred varieties or early harvests.
  • CBD (cannabidiol) is formed from CBGA as CBDA, then converted to CBD by heat or time. It is the most abundant cannabinoid in most industrial hemp, which is why it is the most widely available and lowest priced.
  • CBN (cannabinol) is not made directly by the plant in meaningful amounts. It forms when other cannabinoids break down through oxidation and ageing, or is produced by controlled conversion. That extra processing makes it one of the more expensive cannabinoids per gram.

How they are supplied

CBD CBG CBN
Availability High Medium Lower
Typical isolate purity 99%+ 94–99% 98%+
Common forms Isolate, distillate, CRD, flower, hash, kief Isolate, distillate, CRD, kief Isolate, distillate
Relative price per gram Lowest Higher Highest

What to check when buying

  • The headline percentage against the COA. CBN and CBG distillates in particular are often blends; a "CBN distillate" may contain more CBD than CBN, so read the full cannabinoid table.
  • THC content. Isolates should show THC below the limit of quantitation. Distillates and plant material need to be within the THC limit of the country you sell in.
  • Batch consistency. For manufacturing, ask how much the main cannabinoid varies between batches.
